The Giving Tree
I almost feel like I am committing some great act of blasphemy by questioning everyone's love for THE GIVING TREE. For many years, I was on the same side as the many readers who just adored this book. How can you not love or appreciate the unconditional giving from the tree to the boy? However, maybe we should? In a day and age of entitlement, where it seems much more about what do I get regardless of whether I have earned or deserved something, maybe the message needs to be on appreciating what has been given to us and showing our appreciation towards those who make regular sacrifices on our behalf. The next time you flip this book open consider how the lives of both the tree and the boy would have been different if unconditional giving was met with an equal dose of appreciation and gratitude.
